Claire Lynch

Singing, Songwriting & Leading the Band

Long recognized and praised as a creative force in acoustic music, Claire Lynch is a pioneer who continually pushes the boundaries of the bluegrass genre. Her career has been decorated with many accolades including three GRAMMY nominations, six International Bluegrass Music Association awards and the prestigious United States Artists Walker Fellowship.  Blazing her own trail in the mid 70's when there were few role models for young women in the genre, Claire Lynch made history when she led the Front Porch String Band which evolved in the 80’s and 90’s into “one of the sharpest and most exciting post-modern bluegrass bands on the circuit.” She formed her own Claire Lynch Band in 2005 and has since consistently been a top pick of prestigious publications, critics and audiences across the U.S. and beyond.  In 2014 DigitalJournal.com listed Claire as “One of the 10 Best Angelic Voices of Our Time”. She shared that honor with such luminaries as Judy Collins, Alison Krauss, Sarah McLachlan, Martina McBride, Dolly Parton and Emmylou Harris.

“Listening to Claire Lynch sing is not something to be undertaken casually. Her songs and stage presence demand the listener’s rapt attention. She’s an intensely soulful singer, whose distinctive voice resonates with power and strength, yet retains an engaging innocence and crystalline purity. She’s also a songwriter of extraordinary ability who can bring listeners to their feet with her buoyant rhythms or to their knees with her sometimes almost unbearably poignant and insightful lyrics.” – Dave Higgs, WPLN, Nashville

Claire's Workshop Descriptions

PREREQUISITE for Claire's Songwriting Workshops:  ALL OF CLAIRE'S SONGWRITING WORKSHOPS REQUIRE THAT A LYRIC SHEET (preferably multiple copies) BE PROVIDED IF YOU INTEND TO SHARE A SONG WITH THE CLASS. Part of good songwriting practice is documentation - so go ahead and take the extra step, please!!!

Songwriting 1 - Creative Traits & How We Apply Them to Songwriting:  We will cover some common traits of the creative personality which help the songwriter identify parts of their own process. We will then do exercises and share songs or pieces of songs.

Singing 1 - Finding Your Voice and Sharing the Joy: In this workshop, we'll examine our voices and determine how to maximize our output, preserve our health for the future and share our soul's gift to those around us as we sing.

Singing 2 - Bluegrass Harmony: Throw away your sheet music for this class! We will cover the art of stacking vocals the "bluegrass way", parallel harmony, and chordal tricks to create the "high and lonesome" sound!

Band Psychology – A Benevolent Dictatorship: Claire, Mark and Bryan discuss life, governance, decisionmaking, and the process of arranging and presenting music in a working band.  Come with questions and gripes, like ‘Car Talk’ for bands.

Songwriting 2 - What a Day for a Daydream: Want to "download a song from the universe"?  Here's a class about how you can create a personal atmosphere conducive to doing just that! But bring your instrument and your lyric sheets - we always end class with sharing songs or pieces of songs.

Singing 3 - Sharpening Your Melody Lines: This class will help you hone in on particular notes, riffs, intervals and slurs which will give your song presentation that extra spice.
